Uncorked, The Life and Times of Champagne Tony Lema

Uncorked, The Life and Times of Champagne Tony Lema is the story of Tony Lema, one of the brightest stars on the PGA Tour in the mid-1960s and winner of the 1964 British Open. It is a story of love, faith and redemption. Raised by his mother, Clotilda, after his father’s death when Tony was 6 years old, he overcame a troubled youth. He began winning on the PGA Tour only after meeting and falling in love with Betty Cline, who became his wife. As he later admitted about his career, “When we became serious, I became serious.” After his first victory, at the Orange County Open in October of 1962, he treated the press to champagne thus earning the endearing nickname, “Champagne Tony.”  This promising and glamorous life was ultimately cut short when a small plane carrying him and his wife Betty ran out of fuel and crashed in 1966.

1 review for Uncorked, The Life and Times of Champagne Tony Lema

  1. Michael Duranko

    Great book – Terrible ending

Reading “Uncorked: The Life and Times of Champagne Tony Lema was a joy from the start until the expected, but no-less heartbreaking end. Larry Baush chronicles a golf journey that was unique and stunning and ended far too soon.

From juvenile delinquent to a golfer at the top of his game, Tony Lema was a lovable human. He had that intangible charisma that allowed him to befriend almost everyone he met. And Baush captures the magic and the glamor that Tony Lema lived.

I say the book’s ending was terrible only because of the way Tony and his wife died unexpectedly and unnecessarily in a tragic plane crash at the peak of his career.

Baush handles the end deftly. I highly recommend this book. I know you will enjoy it as much as I did.
